Built in 2015, Casa Vendicari respects the light, the aromas and the silence of the Sicilian land.
The infinite horizon and the stunning view of the Vendicari Nature Reserve have inspired the architectural project.
The landscape always crosses the body of the House in a seamless way.
Furnishings throughout the House are contemporary but the design respects the rules and the landscape, almost physically containing it, in pursuing an ongoing dialogue between nature and architecture. The symbiosis with the context is expressed through the choice of the local stone of Noto and the lava stone of Vulcan Etna.
There is a large living area with ample sliding glass doors looking to the Nature Reserve and opening out onto a very particular pool area served by terraces with numerous spots of resting. The pool (4 x 4,6 metres), coated with lava stone, has been conceived in a central position like a large arab bathtub where you can relax and chat with friends who are lying in the
Close to the pool, surrounded by very old plants, prickly pears and olives trees, there is a covered panoramic terrace with lava stone dining table and a well-equipped outdoor kitchen and barbecue. The decking continues with a large motorized sun blind. During the night this area is a magical spot for long convivial
‘aperitivo’ under the moon and stars. Internally, the panoramic living area is equipped with large sofas and a central positioned lava stone fireplace.
A beautiful ‘made to measure’ island kitchen dominates the space while large custom-made doors hide the appliances, the pantry and the sink.
The House is quite private in the bedroom area, more closed, with oblong-glassed doors framing the sea. Each of these windows offers direct access to the garden with stunning views over the surrounding almond, the salt lagoons and out to sea. Two of the bedrooms are double while the third is a flexible double/twin room, and all of them have its own en-suite bathroom with shower. Big sheet-metal sunscreens run along the façade, shaping and fragmenting the light in the warmest hours, creating origami-like designs on the floor, like the texture of Arabian architecture. They also ensure security while allowing air to circulate.
The Natural Reserve “Wildlife Oasis of Vendicari” was established in 1984 by the Sicilian Region. It is located precisely halfway between Noto and Pachino with a territory that extends for about 1512 hectares.
Inside the reserve, an entire ecosystem lives undisturbed.
You will find yourself frequently in front of breath-taking landscapes, dense vegetation that suddenly opens to a clear sea, very long and golden beaches.
Vendicari is definitely among the Italian areas of major interest from the point of ornithology. From the observation cabins, you can admire Flamingos, Herons, and Storks that hang here before reaching the definitive migratory destinations.
Its geographical position makes it an ideal place to stop, forming a sort of long bridge toward Africa, a privileged way for the migratory flows to and from northern Europe in autumn and spring.
The Tonnara has become one of the symbols of Vendicari, a structure of great charm that dominates the central area of the Reserve. All the beaches of the Reserve (Tonnara, Eloro, Pizzuta, Calamosche, Marianelli) are accessible just a few minutes’ drive and walk from Casa Vendicari, by parking the car and walking some way.
There are many other beaches that you can easily reach by car within 30 minutes’ drive or less without any walk. For most of them the access to the white sands is easy, with lidos and options of water sports: San Lorenzo, Portopalo di Capo Passero and Isola delle Correnti, Ferro di Cavallo - Avola, Calabernardo, Lido di Noto, Fontane Bianche, Riserva
Noto, is an authentic masterpiece of Baroque art protected as a UNESCO Wordls Heritage Site, is only 10 minutes by car from Casa Vendicari.
Marzamemi, one of the prettiest seaside fishing village of this area, is only 10 minutes’ drive from Casa Vendicari. The village is still renowned for its tuna dishes, and is home to a film festival in late July. The restored Tonnara square shelters traditional bars and restaurants. Marzamemi was the filming location of Gabriele Salvatores’s 1993 movie
“Sud” and, the Academy Award-winning director, called it “A place for the soul.
Also close to Casa Vendicari are the gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa Ibla and Scicli and, of course, Syracuse, with its historic island centre, Ortigia.
